Emporia Main Street’s combination of two popular annual events had Commercial Street buzzing Thursday evening.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and certain restrictions, Main Street decided to combine the annual welcome back block party and moonlight madness shopping events into the first-ever Moonlight Madness Welcome Back Walk Party. Emporia State Students and local shoppers alike patronized local businesses either to familiarize themselves with their new surroundings, reacquaint themselves with the local community or simply find an unbeatable bargain.
ESU Junior Maddy Douglas of Overland Park says the annual block party is an event she circles on her calendar each year.
Recent ESU graduate, and Emporia resident, Jack Greenwood was taking a stroll down Commercial as a shopper this year. He says seeing all of the students out and about brings back joyful memories.
Emporia Main Street Director Casey Woods tells KVOE News he is very excited Main Street could hold an event that both made students feel welcomed to the community while supporting local businesses that have been impacted by the ongoing pandemic. Woods stated he was pleased to see “Commercial Street look like Commercial Street again.”
