An insurance research firm has put Emporia high on its list for safest mid-size cities in Kansas.
AdvisorSmith has Emporia ranked fourth, behind Prairie Village, Leawood and Andover. AdvisorSmith used 2018 violent crime and property crime data from the FBI for its data sets. It also compared towns with populations under 10,000 residents, midsize cities with populations from 10,000 to 100,000 people and large cities with populations over 100,000 people. Multipliers were added for more serious crimes like homicides. Those were added to the raw data for final scores.
Emporia’s overall score was 34.9, reflecting 1.2 violent crimes per 1,000 residents and 17.7 property crimes per 1,00 people.
Several area towns were noted. Council Grove was the highest-listed town at 53rd, with Osage City 55th, Lyndon 58th, Waverly 66th and Burlington 139th. Kechi is listed as the safest town in Kansas.
