Lyon County Clerk Tammy Vopat is pleased with how her staff rose to the challenge of handling a massive influx of mail-in ballots for the primary election this week.
Vopat referred to the process as a “complete success” a great practice run for her staff as she anticipates another significant number of mail ballot requests for the upcoming general election in November. In fact, Vopat says her office has already received “a lot” of mail ballot applications.
The last batch of mail ballots arrived Friday and saw no change in the front runners of the Lyon County Commission’s primary races. Second District front-runner Doug Peck added one new vote bringing his total to 901. Phil Mott added one new vote as well bringing his total to 449 while Robert McClelland received two votes leaving his total at 414.
In the Third District race, no new votes were added leaving incumbent Rollie Martin in the lead with 469 votes. Challengers Chris Bartel and Jarom Smith finished with 294 and 281 votes respectively.

While the mail ballot counting is now done, the work for election staff is far from over with the official vote canvas coming Monday. Among several items, the canvas will include a report of all election data as well as a formal decision by Lyon County Commissioners on provisional ballots according to Vopat.
