Kansas Gas says a pilot light issue was the source of Monday evening’s natural gas leak call to Emporia’s Humanitarian Center.
Kansas Gas ad Emporia Fire were dispatched to the building shortly before 6 pm. Kansas Gas Manager of Public Relations Dawn Tripp says a pilot on a customer-owned appliance was the issue.

7:15 pm Monday: At least one business evacuated after apparent gas leak at Humanitarian Center
Kansas Gas is investigating after an apparent gas leak in downtown Emporia on Monday evening.
Emporia Fire was initially called out to the Humanitarian Center, 215 West Sixth, shortly before 6 pm. Early indications are a possible leak developed in or near the basement, but confirmation is pending at this time.
Before Kansas Gas arrived, Emporia Fire closed Congress from Fifth to Sixth and the intersection of Fifth and Constitution. At least one business evacuated as a precautionary measure but returned to normal operations shortly after leaving the building. No injuries were reported.
