Construction crews didn’t wait long after Governor Laura Kelly’s appearance to get started on a major, albeit short, highway expansion project west of Emporia.
Last Monday, Governor Kelly and a handful of state and local officials broke ground on a long-awaited widening of US Highway 50 from Roads E-5 to F. KDOT and its construction partners have been actively preparing that stretch of highway for construction since then, and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers to consider the work zone as an active construction zone even though no actual construction is underway.
Speed limits will be 50 mph for both eastbound and westbound drivers until further notice — likely through the length of the project, which is currently set to end in November 2021. Fines are doubled in construction areas.
