The coronavirus pandemic has caused adjustments for the Lyon County Attorney’s Office.
County Attorney Marc Goodman says the caseload took a nosedive in April, but it has been high since — and had it not been for the April dip, the overall caseload was on pace to be the highest since 2010.
While the number of cases filed has spiked since April, the docket couldn’t fill up until June — and it has, as evidenced by Friday’s docket call with around four times the number of cases handled by that approach.
Goodman says other adjustments have come in prosecuting because several mandates from the state are decades old and often couldn’t be enforced.
Goodman says his office has very little prosecution or enforcement power when it comes to COVID-19. Attorneys cannot prosecute COVID-19 violations under criminal terms except for quarantine violations. They can file civil paperwork for other potential legal issues.
