A text change to the Emporia Lyon County Joint Comprehensive Plan (Plan ELC) was approved by County Commissioners Thursday morning.
The change, presented by Lyon County Zoning and Floodplain Manager Sam Seeley, proposed two changes. The first sought to remove all mention of 40-acre minimums within the plan and replace it with the following wording:
“Allow for development of parcels not less than five acres for a single-family residence in an agricultural district to a density of no more than 16 residences per square mile, subject to lot division approval.”
The second change involved rewording a table which was located on page 153 of the plan. The changes, according to Seeley, were made in order to preserve agricultural land and entice more individuals to settle in the county.
Both changes were approved unanimously.
In other business, commissioners recognized the Lyon County Highway Department for receiving second place in the annual Kansas Local Traffic and Assistance Program’s Build a Better Mouse Trap contest. The Highway Department submitted its portable traffic sign that was developed by the department’s bridge crew according to Assistant County Engineer Jim Brull.
Brull says the sign is a portable temporary replacement in the event that a traffic sign were to be damaged or in need of replacing. He says anytime a sign is damaged it has to be replaced “ASAP.”
He says having the portable sign makes the process a lot less stressful for department crews.
Following these items, commissioners excused themselves to executive sessions for the remainder of the meeting. The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for its weekly action session next Thursday morning inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
