The 2020 Lyon County Fair will be a 4H fair only following the Lyon County Fair Board’s meeting Monday evening.
During the meeting, the board voted unanimously to cancel all of its scheduled night events and open class competitions. Board President Larry Rust says its an unfortunate decision but the most responsible option given current health trends.
On a positive note, all 4H grandstand activities, including the annual rodeo will still be taking place this year. Some changes will be made in accordance with local health trends such as 4Hers only being allowed to submit one animal in the 4H premium livestock sale.
Lyon County Extension Agent Corinne Patterson says while the current situation is not an easy one to navigate, she believes adapting to the pandemic is a great life lesson for their 4Hers to experience.
She says the ability to adapt to the unforeseen is a skill that will serve their 4Hers well not only in their future careers but throughout life in general.
The full scope of plans for 4H activities are still formulating with more information likely to be released in the coming weeks. The Fair Board’s plan comes after the Kansas State Fair Board made the decision to cancel the state fair scheduled Sept. 11-20 in Hutchinson.
Several other area counties have also adjusted their 2020 county fair schedules. More information on those adjustments can be found here.
