The Kansas State Fair will not take place this fall.
The State Fair Board voted 13-0 to cancel the fair, which was originally supposed to take place Sept. 11-20. Livestock shows and 4-H and FFA activities will take place. Concerns about COVID-19 were the reason.
This reverses a vote earlier this month to hold the fair as planned. It’s the first time in 107 years the fair will not be held.
Several area counties have made significant adjustments to their fairs:
*Chase County Fair Board members decided to cancel the event all open-class exhibits, fashion revue, carnival, 4-H Olympics, fun night and livestock sale in the best interest of health and safety for all involved. The Fair Board is planning to allow all 4-H entries that will be judged, but spectators are highly discouraged and only judges, superintendents, Extension Office staff and Fair Board members will be allowed inside buildings during the fair.
*The Coffey County Fair Board will not have a carnival after its vendor said it would not perform at all this summer. Other events are still on tap at last word.
*The Greenwood County Fair has canceled open-class exhibits, the health fair and the 4-H rabbit show.
The Lyon County Fair Board is meeting Monday night to determine whether to go forward with the fair after canceling the carnival.
