US Congress candidate Bill Clifford stopped in Emporia this week to meet with prospective voters and local media.
One of several candidates for the so-called Big First District, Clifford stopped at the KVOE studios to discuss his campaign — including how coronavirus has impacted his work and also how government should be handling the disease. The Garden City Republican says people should take it upon themselves to take protective measures.
Clifford is counting on three different experience tracks to help him as the election draws closer. An Air Force veteran, he’s also an eye doctor and a Finney County commissioner. Not surprisingly, healthcare is one of his major policy points.
Clifford says agriculture is a main concern of his, especially with the ag economy sputtering even before the coronavirus pandemic — although he says the start of the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement should help.
Clifford is among four Republicans running for the seat, which opened up after current Congressman Roger Marshall announced a run for the US Senate seat currently held by Pat Roberts — who is retiring at the end of this year.
Tracey Mann, Jerry Molstad and Michael Soetart are all running as Republicans. Christy Cauble Davis and Kali Barnett are the Democrats in the race.
