Meat markets haven’t recovered yet from coronavirus.
In fact, Lyon County Extension ag agent Brian Rees says fat cattle prices are extremely low and local producers are still having a hard time making profits — although harvest facilities are actually now at or above last year’s levels.
As far as current conditions, Rees says things look good even as grass quality starts to decline.
Rees also says crops are due for a good rainfall. A lot of corn is progressing well, even with the mainly dry conditions.
Beans look decent, but it has been affected by rainfall earlier this year.
Wheat conditions were good, by and large, with test weights of around 60-62 pounds per bushel and yields anywhere from 40-60 bushels an acre.
Rees’ comments came shortly before Governor Kelly announced Lyon, Chase, Coffey, Greenwood and Morris counties in a drought watch.
