(espn) The Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes have agreed to a 10 year extension that could be worth over $450 million dollars.
Mahomes agent tweeted that the deal is worth $503 million dollars.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported on the deal.
The injury guarantee in the contract is $140 million, a source told Schefter.
Mahomes says its not about the money.
The deal actually keeps Mahomes with the Chiefs for the next 12 seasons.
The Chiefs picked up Mahomes’ fifth-year option for the 2021 season in April, putting him under contract for the next two seasons. Mahomes had two years and $27.6 million left on his existing deal — $2.8 million this year, $24.8 million in 2021.
Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach says Mahomes has earned the contract.
Mahomes is off to one of the best starts in NFL history for quarterbacks, winning MVP in 2018 and winning Super Bowl MVP in 2019 while leading the team to its first title in 50 years.
Chiefs Coach Andy Reid calls Mahomes a franchise quarterback.
The length of the deal gives the Chiefs an opportunity to spread out what should be a significant salary-cap hit over multiple years.
Mahomes will have the largest contract in American professional sports.
