Flint Hills Technical College was the latest organization to present a budget request for fiscal year 2021 before Lyon County Commissioners Thursday.
FHTC President Dr. Dean Hollenbeck and Vice President Steve Loewen presented the request of just over $56,000, a roughly $6,000 increase from the college’s 2020 request. Hollenbeck tells KVOE News the majority of the request if approved, will be put towards purchasing new equipment for the college’s Arts and Information Technology divisions.
President Hollenbeck explains in order to provide their students with the high-quality education that has become expected at FHTC, they need the best quality equipment.
The Arts and IT programs have provided education to 498 students over the past three years. Of those 498 students, 355 are residents of Lyon County according to Loewen.
The commission has taken the request under consideration with a decision to be rendered at some point before Aug. 25 when the budget is scheduled to be certified. The 2020-21 academic year for FHTC is scheduled to begin on Aug. 17.
In other business, following a public hearing, commissioners gave direction to the Lyon County Highway Department to post minimum maintenance road signage on 27 Lyon County roads. Assistant Lyon County Engineer Jim Brull explained the signage simply informs travelers of the risks of traveling down a minimum maintenance roadway and will have no effect on the current level of maintenance performed on the 27 county roadways.
Separately Thursday, commissioners also approved additional costs of $4,920 to AAA Glass Service for the installation of glass in the Lyon County District Court offices as part of the county’s COVID-19 mitigation efforts.
The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for their weekly action session next Thursday inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
