USD 252 Southern Lyon County celebrated its graduates with ceremonies at both Hartford and Olpe on Saturday.
Both schools had commencement exercises outside, reflecting both the weather and the now ongoing adjustments due to COVID-19. At Hartford, valedictorian Bailey Darbyshire noted the state’s motto, “Ad Astra Per Aspera,” or “To the Stars Through Difficulties.” She said that was fitting for this class, which had its last three months of in-class education wiped out.
At Olpe, co-valedictorians Jenna Dieker and Mallory Kueser compared their school experience to that of a fairy tale — without the traditional fairy tale ending.
USD 252’s commencement ceremony follows the one for Emporia High School June 7. Northern Heights is tentatively planning for graduation July 18.
