USD 252 Southern Lyon County’s 2020 Honor Flight Trip has been grounded due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Honor Flight announced recently that it has made the “difficult decision” to extend its previously issued mandatory suspension of all flights through the remainder of 2020. When asked if the decision came as a surprise, USD 252 Superintendent Mike Argabright says “yes and no.”
In a news release, Honor Flight states it was anticipating a total of 20,000 veterans would be traveling to Washington D.C. as a part of the Honor Flight Network this year. Also this year, the program was anticipating hitting the milestone achievement of providing free trips to D.C. for a quarter-million veterans since Honor Flight’s inception back in 2015.
Argabright adds that the news is disappointing due to the delay it has brought to local veterans. However; Aragabright says once Honor Flight is able to take off again the veterans who were scheduled to be on the district’s upcoming flight this fall will have first right of refusal for a future trip.
Plans for students who were scheduled to serve as guardians for veterans on the trip are currently pending.
Honor Flight is a nationwide organization that pairs veterans with student guardians for a two-day trip to Washington, D.C., where the contingent visits a number of sites and war memorials.
