Health restrictions are easing when it comes to coronavirus. Fears from health officials about the virus are not.
Lyon County Health Officer Renee Hively says she expects an increase in cases by late June, making those comments on KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Monday.
Hively says she has reservations about the recommendation to go to a Phase 3 recovery plan despite encouraging Lyon County commissioners to take that step last week, but she says Public Health is trying to account for the needs of Lyon County’s business community.
Hively also spoke about Public Health’s evolving policy on naming cluster sites. She says Lyon County started naming cluster locations but decided against that method.
Final weekend totals will be released later in the day, but Hively says at least 12 new cases were noted in Lyon County last weekend. That would put Lyon County at close to 470 total cases and around 70 active cases.
With area counties at different stages of the recovery process — ranging from Lyon, Morris and Wabaunsee counties with a 45-person mass gathering maximum to Osage County allowing 90 people at gatherings to Greenwood County removing all restrictions — Hively says the state’s decision to make contact tracing voluntary, especially at a time with more movement and larger gatherings, are concerning because it makes it harder for health officials to determine community spread.
