It’s a beautiful week to help save lives by donating to the American Red Cross.
This was the message shared by American Red Cross spokesperson Susan Faler during a recent installment of KVOE’s Newsmaker segment. After last week’s community blood drive collected a grand total of 159 pints, the Red Cross and Emporia High School are looking to keep the success rolling this week.
Wednesday and Thursday an EHS student-organized blood drive will be taking place at Flint Hills Mall next to the movie theater. Faler says the Red Cross is encouraging all recent EHS graduates to attend.
Faler adds the blood drive will also double as a fundraiser for the Emporia High School Student Council. If the drive manages to collect 30 pints, the American Red Cross will provide a $10 credit for every pint collected.
Meaning if the blood drive collects 50 pints the EHS Stuco could receive $500. Faler says appointments are almost full for Wednesday’s blood drive with just three openings remaining, however, there is plenty of space available for Thursday’s event with 37 openings remaining.
Every pint of blood donated has the potential to save up to three lives and Faler says the need has become urgent as donations have dropped 20 percent with school out of session and elective surgeries now resuming.
For more information or to schedule a donation appointment visit Redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. Appointments are being encouraged as the Red Cross has less room to accommodate walk-ins due to social distancing and sanitation efforts.
