(ESPN) Donald “Reche” Caldwell, who spent seven seasons in the NFL as a wide receiver after a stellar career at Florida, was killed in his hometown of Tampa, Florida, on Saturday night. He was 41.
Caldwell helped lead the Gators to an SEC championship in 2000. He played four seasons with San Diego after he was a second-round draft pick. His best season was 2006, when he led New England with 760 yards. He then played one season with Washington in 2007.
Caldwell was awaiting sentencing this month for conspiracy to commit health care fraud after several former NFL players filed nearly $4 million in false insurance claims over an 18-month span.
