Dillons has reopened to customers after Wednesday’s chiller malfunction.
The store typically opens at 7 am but opened at 9 am after intensive cleaning. The cleanup was needed after refrigerant vapors were sprayed in the store and got out of the store Wednesday evening.
The first emergency call was actually for a fire. Here’s Battalion Chief Ryan Conley:
Conley says firefighters went inside the store and quickly ruled out a fire. They then went to the maintenance room and discovered at least a puncture in a chiller hose. KVOE News has reached out to Dillons for additional information.
5 am Thursday: Investigation underway after chiller malfunction at Dillons
What appeared to be smoke turned out to be refrigerant vapors as Emporia Fire headed to Dillons for an incident Wednesday evening.
Firefighters, Emporia Police and Evergy were dispatched to Dillons, 902 East 12th, shortly before 6 pm after fire was reported, and the apparent smoke was visible between Dillons and Goodwill. However, Battalion Chief Ryan Conley says firefighters could tell pretty quickly there was no fire involved.
Firefighters discovered at least a puncture in a chiller hose. Further damage details are pending.
At this time, there is no word on when Dillons will reopen.
Conley says Dillons, Goodwill and Old Rums Liquor were evacuated. No injuries were reported.
