Choices for the 2020 election cycle may be expanding rapidly.
The candidate filing and withdrawal deadline is noon Monday, and this week has already seen a flurry of activity. 60th District Representative Mark Schreiber may have a general election challenge if no fellow Republicans step up to challenge him in the August primary. Democrat Todd Maddox filed Wednesday. Maddox entered politics with a run for Emporia City Commission last year.
76th District Representative Eric Smith, a Republican, has a primary challenge from Robert Harmon of Osage City.
51st District Representative Ron Highland has filed for re-election. Highland has served the district since 2013. He’s currently unopposed, either in the primary or general election, and he says this will be his last term if he’s elected.

At the county level, Ronald McCoy has filed for the Lyon County Commission Second District seat left open once Dan Slater retires at the end of his term. He says his business experience as a trucking company owner will serve him well if elected.
McCoy says economic development and coronavirus planning are driving him to run. He is the first Democrat to file, with Republicans Robert McClelland, Phil Mott and Doug Peck setting up a primary for the seat.
