The Senate Assessment and Tax Committee is proposing changes to push property tax interest and penalty deadlines to August and eliminate appraisal increases for normal home maintenance or repairs.
Committee members passed a bill that would delay property tax penalties and interest until Aug. 10, even though the second-half payment deadline happened earlier this week. Income tax deadlines, which have already been pushed from April 15 to July 15, would remain in place.
Senate President Susan Wagle says the package would also make it mandatory that taxpayers be notified if rate increases will take place. Counties would not be allowed to increase appraisals for normal home maintenance and repairs if the full Legislature and Governor Laura Kelly approve the package.
