The state’s emergency disaster declaration was extended Wednesday, but not by the length of time wanted by Governor Laura Kelly.
The State Finance Council approved an extension to May 26, a 12-day extension, instead of the governor’s request for a 30-day extension into mid-June. This lets lawmakers have a chance to review the overall declaration when they have a short veto session May 21, but it also sets the stage for lawmakers possibly curtailing the governor’s emergency powers.
The extended declaration also means several executive orders are extended to May 26, including orders temporarily halting utility and Internet disconnects, expanding telemedicine and deferring tax deadlines and payments.
