Residents needing marriage licenses can start getting those through Lyon County District Court — and they don’t have to go to the courthouse in downtown Emporia.
Lyon County District Court is now processing new marriage license applications by encrypted email. Marriage licenses need applicants to provide photo ID. To protect this information, which can include date of birth, Social Security number or driver’s license number, an encrypted email exchange has been set up. Residents can also receive the application by US mail if they do not have email addresses.
Applicants will also swear oaths on paper or via email.
Prior marriage licenses will not be processed if they were submitted before courts closed to in-person contact March 18 and those licenses were not issued — meaning residents will have to submit new applications.
For more information, call Lyon County District Court at 341-3280.
Meanwhile, plans to expand the court system’s centralized case management operations has been delayed due to coronavirus. This was supposed to expand to the Fourth Judicial District including Coffey and Osage counties next month and go statewide by the end of next year. A new timetable has not been announced.
The new system wil allow all district and appellate case information to be on one web-based platform.
