A primary election is coming for the Lyon County Commission’s Third District seat.
Jarom Smith has filed paperwork to challenge Republican incumbent Rollie Martin. Smith tells KVOE News he’s concerned about the ongoing county discussions on new zoning regulations. He also says it’s time for a new voice on the board.
Smith says the new zoning rules will be more restrictive for county residents, saying in his mind they turn the county into “a homeowners’ association.”
When asked about the ongoing coronavirus situation, Smith says the county has to comply with state mandates. At the same time, if hospitals are not overwhelmed, the county should do what it can to ease restrictions on business and travel.
Smith currently owns Justice Painting, which has been in business since 2017.
Martin, meanwhile, is seeking his fourth term in office. He has served as the commission’s board chair the past several years.
Three Republicans, Robert McClelland, Phil Mott and Doug Peck, are running to replace Dan Slater for the Second District. All incumbent department heads — County Attorney Marc Goodman, County Clerk Tammy Vopat, Register of Deeds Wendy Weiss, Sheriff Jeff Cope and Treasurer Sharon Gaede — have formally filed for re-election. All are currently unopposed, either for the primary Aug. 4 or the general election Nov. 3.
