Council Grove City Lake is in a blue-green algae watch at this time.
The Council Grove Water Department noticed possible blue-green algae in the lake late last month and sent samples to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for testing. The watch means algae have been detected and a harmful bloom is either present or likely to develop.
Blue-green algae is toxic to people and animals. Swimming, wading and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms, while pets and livestock should be kept away from the water. People and pets alike should not eat dried algae or drink untreated water. If fishing, people need to clean fish well and discard the guts.
