The state’s primary election is less than three months away, and next week Lyon County residents will receive applications for mail ballots.
On KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Thursday, County Clerk Tammy Vopat said every registered voter will get the application shortly after they get mailed Tuesday. Applications need to be turned in no later than July 28, but Vopat encourages residents to turn those in as soon as possible.
Applicants interested in getting a mail ballot need to submit name and address, driver’s license or ID information, date of birth, political party affiliation, phone number and a signature. Unaffiliated voters will have a chance to join a political party.
Vopat says the current state plan is to have a regular election, meaning polling places and mail ballots as options for voters. Currently, mail-in elections are for special issues only.
The primary election is Aug. 4, and mail ballots have to be in hand by then or else they won’t count.
Separately, Lyon County is receiving close to $29,000 in federal CARES Act funding to protect election workers and ensure the upcoming election goes off without a hitch. Vopat says personal protective equipment like hand sanitizer, disinfectant spray, face masks and gloves are covered, as well as rubbing alcohol, floor tape, cleaning supplies and the mail ballot envelopes.
As a whole, Kansas is getting $2.6 million in stimulus money to help prepare for the elections in August and November.
