There may be some encouraging news for Emporia State coaches from the NCAA.
The NCAA Division II Administrative Committee adopted legislation to permit voluntary workouts at the request of the student-athlete in team sports until the start of the school’s fall 2020 term. The committee made this change to create more opportunities for student-athletes to engage with coaches.
Emporia State mens basketball Coach Craig Doty calls this a good rule.
Emporia State football Coach Garin Higgins says it could be a benefit.
The other concern for Coach Higgins is that everyone is there is a level playing field.
Emporia State womens basketball coach Toby Wynn says for most years this would be great.
Emporia State soccer Coach Bryan Sailer says most years summer is designed for recovery.
This legislation does not permit full team practices. Student-athletes in individual sports were already permitted to request voluntary workouts during the summer.
Division I
At the Division I level the NCAA approved a waiver that will allow schools to spend below the minimum level on athletic scholarships required to compete in Division I.
The Division I Council Coordination Committee approved two other blanket waivers Wednesday that had been requested by several conferences in recent weeks in response to coronavirus pandemic.
Basketball and football players will be allowed to participate in summer athletic activities without being enrolled in school. Also, schools that are in the process of moving to D-I can be counted toward the minimum required Division I opponents.
