Lyon County is getting federal money to help emergency food and shelter programs — as well as a separate grant to help the local response to COVID-19.
The United Way of the Flint Hills says Lyon County is getting almost $12,000 for emergency food and shelter programs. The county is now also receiving over $16,500 from the $2.2 trillion CARES Act as supplemental funding.
A national board made the selection for the funds through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program. A local board represented by the United Way, ECKAN, Emporia Rescue Mission, American Red Cross, Catholic Charities and others will determine how those funds will be utilized and which agencies will have them available.
Funds have to bolster food and shelter services currently in place and cannot be used as seed money for new programs. Allowed activities include food services; lodging in a mass shelter; one-month rent or mortgage assistance; one-month utility assistance for gas, electricity and water; and supplies or small equipment deemed essential for feeding or sheltering people.
Voluntary entities, both public and private, that are interesting in applying for funds through this program need to call United Way Community Impact Manager Hannah Crowl at 620-342-7564 for applications. Paperwork is due May 17.
