Police, firefighters, and emergency medical service members are what you may think of when you think of real-life heroes, but during the COVID-19 pandemic a new set of heroes has risen to the occasion, USD 253 Food Service.
Since the closing of school, the department has helped provide over 55,000 meals to Emporia students. These meals range from Fanestil ham sandwiches and Uncrustables to hot meals like hamburgers and chicken patty sandwiches.
On KVOE’s Morning Show recently, Coordinator Denise Kater said it’s tough to gauge the number of meals to prepare each day.
The current food service plan extends through the end of the school year. A tweak to the plan, in place since last week, lets students pick up a meal Monday and then two days’ worth of meals on Tuesday and Thursday to allow Food Service workers more time off.
Kater also says the USDA has approved grab-and-go through June 30 so once the school year meal plan ends and the summer plan begins, students will still be allowed to take their lunch and leave.
