Council Grove’s Water Department is telling people to be careful while using Council Grove City Lake.
Department staffers are now testing for blue-green algae, with samples going to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for analysis this week.
Blue-green algae is toxic to people and animals. Swimming, wading and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms, while pets and livestock should be kept away from the water. People and pets alike should not eat dried algae or drink untreated water. If fishing, people need to clean fish well and discard the guts.
To report algae blooms, call KDHE at 785-296-1664. To report possible illnesses due to algae, call 877-427-7317.
