The third draft of the Emporia-Lyon County zoning plan is now available for review.
On KVOE’s Talk of Emporia on Friday, city and county officials urged residents to look over the draft and offer their comments. City Zoning Specialist Joe Foster says the city and county are moving away from traditional zoning, which provides uniformity with land usage but is short on flexibility. Case in point: the need for buildable lots in the city limits.
County Zoning and Floodplain Administrator Sam Seeley says there are always misconceptions whenever zoning matters are addressed. This process is no exception.
The draft reflects a lot of discussion and adjustments since public hearings last fall. New proposals have been added for signs — more for size and less for content — and telecommunications as the city and county balance new guidance from the state while still trying to maintain some local control on placement.
The draft process was largely unaffected by coronavirus. The plan for public hearings, however, is to be determined after the official comment period ends May 26.
Information is available on the city and county websites as well as the Lyon County Planning and Zoning Facebook page. Click here to view the draft.
