USD 253 Emporia Public Schools is excited to announce its two newest hires for Emporia High School and the Flint Hills Learning Center.
USD 253 announced via separate news releases this week they have officially hired Justin Sargeant as the new director of FHLC and former Emporia School District educator Sheryl Leeds as the newest Assistant Principal at EHS.
Sargeant, a native of California, comes to Emporia from the Richland School District in Shafter, CA. In his career, Sargeant has been the recipient of multiple teaching awards and holds Master of Arts degrees in Educational Leadership and Teaching from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego California and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with an English Literature Minor from
California State University Bakersfield.
FHLC is USD 253’s alternative learning education center which serves both high school-aged learners and adults. Sargeant says while working with adults is something he is not accustomed to, it is one of the most exciting aspects of the position for him.
Sheryl Leeds comes, or rather returns, to Emporia from USD 470 Arkansas City where she served as the IXL elementary building principal. Leeds brings 30 years of teaching and administrative experience to the position, which included teaching seventh-grade math in Emporia in the early days of her career.
Leeds says she is looking forward to being back in a familiar setting.
Leeds is a graduate of both EHS and Emporia State University where she acquired a district-level leadership certification, Masters in educational administration, and
a Bachelor of Science degree in education. Leeds will fill the vacancy left by the resignation of current EHS assistant principal Brenda Dennis.
Sargeant will replace current director Stephanie Sullivan who is retiring. Both Sargeant and Leeds are scheduled to officially begin their duties as of July 1.
