Say hello to Beulah the bison.
The David Traylor Zoo now has a one-year-old female in quarantine, thanks to a donation by Madison residents Randall, Kristi and Cliff Schankie, who have a small herd in northern Greenwood County.
Zoo Director Lisa Keith says Beulah will be introduced at some point to the zoo’s 17-year-old bull bison, but that step is some time away. Beulah should also be ready for public viewing once the coronavirus pandemic eases and the zoo can re-open to the public.
Keith says they’re excited to have Bison as a part of the zoo due to their history in the local area as well as their significance to the nation as a whole.
The American bison is the largest land animal in North America, with males reaching up to 6.5 feet tall and over 12 feet long. Females can be up to 5 feet tall and 10 feet long. Bison can weigh up to one ton.
Beulah replaces Jane, a bison that passed away in 2018 at age 26.
