With little certainty as to when things will begin to return to normal, the Kansas Corporation Commission has extended its previous order which suspends utility disconnects for nonpayment.
Originally set to expire this week, the KCC has extended the order until May 15. This directive covers all electrical, natural gas, water, and telecommunication utilities under KCC jurisdiction.
The KCC has also encouraged utilities that are not under its jurisdiction to enact similar practices.
One company that has gone beyond that encouragement is Evergy, which extended its special coronavirus polices through June 1. The policies ensure customers will not be disconnected for nonpayment, waive late fees for residential and small businesses, and allow customers who were previously disconnected to get reconnected by paying one-twelfth of their due balance.
