Governor Laura Kelly offered her first official comments following her legal victory over the Legislative Coordinating Council this past weekend.
The Kansas Supreme Court ruled in the governor’s favor Saturday following the LCC’s decision to override her order which limited church and funeral gatherings to 10 or less last week. During her daily press conference Monday, Governor Kelly graciously thanked the Supreme Court for their quick action in resolving the situation.
Kelly says it is to be expected that tensions and disagreements will arise during an unprecedented time such as this.
Governor Kelly also says that although the past week was been difficult, she finds it encouraging that “our government worked just as it is designed to work when put to the test.” Governor Kelly concluded her remarks by stating she looks forward to a continued partnership with all levels of government as the state continues its response efforts to the coronavirus pandemic.
Separately, Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Dr. Lee Norman stated the state is currently “out-performing” original expectations in terms of positive COVID-19 cases. Norman points to social distancing guidelines as a key factor for this success saying “we’ve out-performed where we would have been otherwise.”
Along with her remarks on the Supreme Court’s recent decision Governor Kelly also announced her latest executive order. Executive order 20-22 will extend temporary relief for motor carriers from certain rules and regulations.
Governor Kelly says these exemptions will apply only to motor carriers “actively participating” in COVID-19 efforts. Governor Kelly is scheduled to continue her daily news briefings at 2 pm Tuesday.
