Severe thunderstorms fizzled on Emporia’s doorstep Saturday evening, but not before dropping large hail to our west and northwest.
Several storm clusters began developing shortly before sunset and gradually pushed east. One cluster produced egg-sized hail in a swath from around Marion to just west of Elmdale. A storm split from that cluster, turning towards Council Grove and dumping golf-ball-sized hail there.
Rain totals have not been reported across the area. The KVOE studios received a trace of rainfall, while the Emporia Municipal Airport picked up 0.03 inches.
High winds are expected for most of Easter as part of a potentially active weather day. Lyon, Coffey, Osage and Wabaunsee counties are in a wind advisory from 10 am to 10 pm. Morris County is in a high wind warning during those times, while Chase and Greenwood counties are in a high wind warning from 7 am Sunday to 1 am Monday.
A marginal severe weather risk exists along and southeast of the Kansas Turnpike for the early afternoon hours. Hail and wind are the potential issues.
Sharply colder conditions will develop later in the day with freeze conditions areawide overnight. Several freeze warnings are in effect for area counties:
*Lyon, Coffey, Osage counties: 10 pm Sunday to 9 am Monday
*Morris, Wabaunsee counties: 8 pm Sunday to 9 am Monday
Overnight temperatures in the mid- to upper 20s will likely damage or kill unprotected plants.
