A hard freeze is expected Friday morning.
The National Weather Service has issued freeze warnings for the entire listening area. Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties are in a warning from 2-9 am, while Chase and Greenwood counties are in a warning from 4-8 am.
Temperatures in the upper 20s are expected areawide. The Weather Service says those temperatures will likely kill crops and other sensitive plants, so people need to protect those plants as best they can. Overnight temps could also damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Before the cold air settles in, there is a high fire danger for Thursday afternoon. Vegetation may be greening up, but a combination of low relative humidity levels and wind gusts approaching 30 mph will lead to dangerous burning conditions. Osage and Wabaunsee counties will revisit their countywide burn bans Thursday morning. Emporia, meanwhile, remains in a citywide burn ban until further notice as a precautionary measure with coronavirus an ongoing concern.
