While numerous churches across the state, including those in the KVOE listening area, have been shifting their service delivery platforms to combat COVID-19 in recent weeks, the latest executive order from Governor Laura Kelly is now ensuring all churches follow suit.
During her daily press conference Tuesday afternoon Governor Kelly issued executive order 20-18 limiting all church gatherings and funerals to a maximum of 10 people or less. Governor Kelly stated of all the executive orders issued in recent weeks, this order has brought her the greatest sadness as it comes in the midst of Holy Week.
Governor Kelly says the reason for the executive order comes as recent information has shown a correlation between church gatherings and community spread of COVID-19.
Well before the Governor issued the order churches across the state had already begun taking action to adjust services to assist with flattening the COVID-19 curve. As KVOE recently reported this included local churches moving to online delivery platforms and some have even expanded pre-existing special services to continue in-person fellowship with proper social distancing.
For example, Messiah Lutheran Church has simply expanded on its annual Easter drive-in service at the Lyon County Fairgrounds making it a weekly event. Pastor Eddie Hosch says they will be continuing these services and currently plan to hold their regular Easter service this Sunday with some minor adjustments.
Hosch says it is fitting that the order came down at this time, as people’s spirits have been likely dampened in recent weeks due to the adjustments caused by COVID-19. He feels given the recent circumstances religious messages and services may resonate more profoundly with residents.
During Tuesday’s press conference, Governor Kelly wished to be clear that her order does not ban funerals or religious gatherings from taking place. Governor Kelly also praised all of the churches that had already switched from traditional services to other methods. Kelly stated religious activities are an essential function as part of the Kansas Essential Function Framework — and as such cannot be eliminated.
Governor Kelly will continue her daily press briefings at 2 pm Wednesday. You can listen in to the conference on KVOE 1400 am and 96.9 fm.
