If — or more likely, when — it’s asked to expand its role across the state, the Kansas National Guard is ready.
The National Guard has been asked to take on a limited role helping at the Kansas Division of Emergency Management office. Nationwide, duties have varied from what the Kansas National Guard is doing to transporting medical supplies to delivering test samples, and Command Sergeant Major Steve Harmon expects the Kansas National Guard will have to expand its role in battling coronavirus at some point.
Rumors have run rampant about that role for several weeks. Harmon squashed rumors about the National Guard being used to enforce quarantines or laws in general.
Harmon says National Guard personnel are practicing social distance methods, and all military branches are reworking their operations with staggered schedules and video training to meet the need. He also says the Guard has contingency plans in place for a range of issues, including all natural disasters and — yes — viruses.
