I feel lucky! Maybe not Lou Gehrig – “the Luckiest man on the face of the earth,” lucky, but pretty good because I live in Kansas.
I feel lucky because we have a governor who isn’t afraid to lead. Governor Kelly’s early decision to close Kansas schools and her recent “Stay at Home Decree” were bold steps that are helping our state deal with the Corona Virus in a manner that is allowing us to have some of the best numbers anywhere.
Lucky also because of our tremendous local effort. Jarrod Fell and Renee Hively have been impressive leaders in Lyon County with support from their bosses. Newman Hospital also appears to be poised for an expected surge in Covid 19 patients.
Our schools are stepping up in a wonderful way. Teachers are responding in a magnificent manner. There’s a list of community leaders and groups too many to mention that are shoulder to shoulder to create the safest place to live possible.
My observation is we are doing a wonderful job of Social Distancing especially as it pertains to indoor events.
Our challenge, of course, is that we are just getting started. How long will this last? The end of April for sure and maybe even a lot longer.
It will be important to stay the course. We cannot allow ourselves to get comfortable and start cheating the rules. Six feet needs to be the minimum – even outside.
We need to stay ahead of the curve. Flatten it and keep it that way because the experts say this virus will return in the fall. The better we do it now will determine our position later.
Here are some old but important facts from Johns Hopkins University. Soap and hot water are the best remedies against the Corona Virus. Interestingly, it’s the soap bubbles that cut the fat and attack the virus. That’s why rubbing our hands for 20 seconds is so important. Alcohol is good too, but not vodka!
Last thought. Last week I ask you to pray. That stands, but here’s a twist.
When I was growing up Oral Roberts became famous as a television preacher. He was charismatic as heck and it was fun to watch him heal people. He always ended his shows with “Expect a miracle.”
Now, it’s above my pay grade to know if we should be asking God for a miracle, but given the magnitude of this pandemic, I plan to give it a shot.
I think you’ll agree a miracle would be welcome right now.
I’m Steve Sauder and I am Expecting a miracle.
