The Emporia City Commission could add a new offense to the city code during their action session Wednesday afternoon.
Commissioners will consider an ordinance that would add “violating a public health order” to the list of enforceable city codes. The ordinance would make it illegal to disobey any order of the Lyon County Health Officer, Lyon County Board of Health or the Lyon County Director of Health.
The violation would be a class c misdemeanor and would be punishable by a fine of up to $500, a jail term of up to one month or both. This ordinance mirrors similar penalties which could become state law enforcing punishments for the disobeying rules or regulations set forth by the secretary of health and environment.
In other business, commissioners will hold a public hearing for the establishment of the Riverside Addition as a Rural Housing Incentive District. Following the hearing commissioners may formally approve the ordinance.
The meeting begins at 1:30 pm inside the Municipal Courtroom at White Auditorium.
