Emporia’s Salvation Army has had to make several coronavirus-related adjustments to meet client needs and keep staff safe.
Capt. Deb Thompson says the thrift store has been closed with no donations currently being accepted. The bread line is now using a curbside delivery model. The lobby is also closed, meaning adjustments for food pantry service.
There has been a small increase in return clients to the food pantry, but there has been a big influx of new residents. The Salvation Army is low on breakfast cereals, shelf-stable milk. canned food, mixed vegetables, boxed and freezer meals, spaghetti supplies, peanut butter and jelly.
In addition, there is no rent or utility assistance until further notice. Thompson says that step was taken for two reasons: first, there can’t be any coronavirus-based evictions while the state stay-home order is in effect, and second, assistance meetings involve a lot of face time between staff and clients.
