Totals aren’t announced yet and details haven’t been divulged, but Newman Regional Health and Emporia State University will benefit from the $2.2 trillion federal stimulus package designed to jumpstart the economy from coronavirus.
Congressman Roger Marshall says the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, or CARES Act, will provide an increase in Medicaid reimbursements for Newman Regional Health. It also offers additional payments for COVID-19 admissions and allows for both the production and distribution of more personal protective equipment, known as PPE, for hospital staff.
Emporia State, meanwhile, gets funding to help continue delivering classes.
Marshall says there will also be funding for ag products with that sector still struggling under poor market conditions.
Besides $100 billion for health care, $10 billion for agriculture and money for higher education, the CARES Act will provide over $150 million for airports, $5 billion for Community Development Block Grants, assistance for banks, additional loan flexibility for small business owners and expanded unemployment insurance eligibility for displaced workers. It also provides direct cash infusions for individuals and couples, provided an individual’s income is below $99,000 and a couple’s income is below $198,000.
Marshall will appear on KVOE’s Talk of Emporia at 11:06 am Wednesday. Senator Jerry Moran, meanwhile, will be on KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment at 8:30 am Wednesday to discuss the federal response to COVID-19.
