The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is adjusting its criteria for testing residents for COVID-19.
KDHE is trying to conserve testing capabilities and the number of tests. To that end, it is limiting tests to the following:
*Healthcare workers and first responders who have symptoms of COVID-19
*Potential clusters of unknown respiratory illnesses. Priority is given to long-term care facilities and healthcare facilities
*Hospitalized patients with no alternative diagnosis
*Individuals over age 60 with symptoms of COVID-19. Priority will be given to residents in nursing homes, long-term care facilities or other “congregate” settings
*Individuals with underlying health conditions that would be treated differently if they were infected by COVID-19
Right now, tests are being conducted only with a medical provider’s order — and only if patients present a risk after completing both a verbal and physical health screen. Tests for patients that do not meet the state’s criteria will be sent to a Lenexa lab. Turnaround time is two to three days. Cost is $98 and is billed through a patient’s insurance coverage.
THe KDHE’s new guidance on COVID-19 testing comes as both Newman Regional Health and Flint Hills Community Health Center strengthen their visitation restrictions.
Newman Regional Health Medical Partners has issued a new set of “high-restriction guidelines” which limit patients themselves to enter a given clinic. Family, friends or caregivers will not be permitted unless the patient is unable to come alone, at which point they are asked to call ahead so staff may make necessary arrangements.
For child appointments, only one parent may be allowed to accompany them and siblings will not be permitted. A screening will be completed before anyone is allowed to enter the clinic, this includes a temperature check and verbal screening.
Flint Hills Community Health Center has enacted almost identical restrictions, including one patient in a clinic, only one parent or guardian allowed with a child appointment and a mandatory screening including a temperature check and a series of questions. Staff will direct patients to a specific area of the waiting room, depending on the reason for their visit or type of appointment.
