While Emporia City offices may be closed, projects within the city are still moving full steam ahead.
This is according to city manager Mark McAnanrney who recently spoke with KVOE News to update the plans moving forward. At this time all ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the downtown sanitary sewer realignment, are still in motion with proper social distancing procedures in place.
McAnarney says while coronavirus is causing a number of adjustments to local schedules, these projects are something that cannot be put off due to how critical they are to everyday life.
While projects are proceeding as scheduled at this time, McAnarney acknowledges the fact that information on the virus is constantly changing, meaning plans and schedules are rapidly doing the same. He says in the event the virus lead to certain projects, namely those funded by state and federal grant programs, to be halted, city officials would then consult with the funding agencies to decide how to proceed further. This includes seeking contract extensions, changing previous timelines and other essential details to ensure the work is completed and all requirements are fulfilled for the city to receive the necessary funds.
In terms of the number of staff involved in projects, McAnarney says the city currently has no plans of reducing the size of work crews for the purpose of social distancing. He tells KVOE News that is a decision that will be made by the respective contractors handling each project.
