With a state of local disaster in hand, Lyon County continues doing its best to stay in front of the fast-developing coronavirus situation.
Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell says the declaration gives the county a better chance of success if a competition builds for certain critical resources, which he expects. It also opens the door for certain loan packages through the Small Business Administration.
Fell tells residents to take the messages from health officials to heart.
Fell also credited the county’s public health team for its work over the past week as the virus reached pandemic stage.
The county’s decision followed a series of recommendations from Governor Laura Kelly and Education Commissioner Randy Watson to halt school operations this week. All area school districts coming out of spring break, including USD 253 Emporia, USD 251 North Lyon County, USD 252 Southern Lyon County Emporia Christian School, Sacred Heart Elementary and all three Greenwood County schools, heeded the recommendations. The districts going into spring break, meanwhile, announced they are not having any student activities at all through the upcoming weekend.
Regular board meetings for the Flint Hills Technical College Board of Trustees and Emporia Recreation Commission on Monday will highlight the COVID-19 response for both entities. The FHTC Board of Trustees meeting starts at 4 pm at the college main campus, while the Rec Commission Board meets at 5:30 pm at the Lee Beran Recreation Center.
