The first Kansas coronavirus fatality has been confirmed in Wyandotte County.
Governor Laura Kelly confirmed a Wyandotte man in his 70’s passed away from the disease in an undisclosed Wyandotte County hospital Thursday. In response to the death, Governor Kelly has declared a state of emergency for Kansas.
The declaration means extra resources and funding will be made available to employees of the state. The Wyandotte man was the fifth confirmed case of coronavirus in the state of Kansas and is the first fatality.
Four other individuals have also been diagnosed with the disease with all of those individuals residing in Johnson County according to KVOE affiliate WIBW in Topeka.
Separately, schedule adjustments continue across the state amid growing concerns of the coronavirus pandemic. the Kansas State High School Athletics Association has decided to cancel the remainder of its state basketball tournaments. This includes the 5A state tournament being hosted at White Auditorium in Emporia and the 1A state tournament in Dodge City involving the Ople Lady Eagles.
In a Twitter post Thursday evening, KSHSAA stated: “Given the escalating concerns regarding COVID-19, the best decision for the safety of the student-athletes and spectators was to cancel the remainder of this championship tournament. The KSHSAA regrets the lost opportunity for teams and players that have worked to achieve their goals.”
