As the high school basketball season begins to wind down local residents still have time to watch some of the best high school teams in the state this week.
The 5A state tournament gets underway Wednesday at White Auditorium. This is the 71st year that Emporia will be hosting a state tournament of any class.
Emporia Recreation Commission and tournament Director Tom McEvoy, Wednesday’s Newsmaker guest, says White Auditorium is the number one location in Kansas for state basketball.
McEvoy adds the atmosphere along with the friendliness and willingness from volunteers to help serve visitors to the auditorium, as well as a time tested list of long-time volunteers who have got the tournament proceedings down to a science helps it run smoothly year after year.
The first games of the opening round began at 3 pm Wednesday and will conclude Thursday. The tournament semi-finals will be played Friday with the third-place and championship games taking place on Saturday.
You can find full brackets and game times for the tournament online at www.KSHSAA.org.
