Concerns about coronavirus are starting to impact events in Kansas.
Special Olympics Kansas is canceling several events either taking place now or later in March. The state basketball and cheerleading tournaments in Topeka this upcoming weekend and in Hays the following weekend are both canceled. All young athlete programs and team practices scheduled through March 23 are also canceled. Special Olympics is also canceling the outdoor skills event activities Tuesday and the KU Unified Basketball championship March 19.
President and CEO John Lair says Special Olympics has been closely monitoring the situation and has been coordinating its response with several entities, including Special Olympics, Inc.; Special Olympics North America; and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The decision to cancel the March events was “incredibly disappointing” but done with the health and safety of athletes, volunteers, staff and partners in mind.
