Once again burning is a no-go in the KVOE listening area Saturday.
Red flag warnings have been issued for the KVOE listening area. Lyon, Coffey, Osage, Morris and Wabaunsee counties are in a warning from noon to 7 pm Saturday. Meanwhile, Chase and Greenwood counties are in a separate warning also from noon to 7 pm. Most of our area counties will have burn bans coinciding with the red flag warning, but the city of Emporia automatically bans fires in the city limits if wind speeds are above 15 mph.
The red flag warnings were issued due to a number of environmental factors including low relative humidity, extremely dry fuels, and strong winds upwards of 40 mph. Lyon County Emergency Manager Jarrod Fell says while no burning is allowed throughout the county at this time, residents still need to exercise caution when it comes to other activities which increase fire risks such as discarding cigarettes or grilling.
Residents who had controlled burns earlier in the week will have to take extra precautions so rekindles don’t develop.
Local fire crews already had their hands full Friday with a number of minor grass fires throughout the day. This includes a small grass fire in the 1200 block of Road 180 just northeast of the Burlingame Road exit as well as a second fire at Roads B2 and 170 both before 2:30 pm. A third grass fire then developed in the 1000 block of Road 210, with roughly an acre of grass engulfed, shortly after 4 pm.
